National Academies Report "Reflecting Sunlight" and book covering improved cloud albedo, particles in the upper atmosphere and thinning high clouds (which can be absorbers) is found here, but does not mention croffles or any floating mirror. Those cloud changing technologies are likely to involve unintended consequences, the report says.
NEWS: A recent article published by Oxford University Press. The lead author is James Hansen and this is a major review of all the evidence.
The albedo is covered by a graph of the energy balance. Now that has reached an extra 2 Watts/square metre. That balance must be corrected. The article only presses for more research, for example into clouds, which is good, but geo engineering is not emphasised.
As an engineer, I am frustrated by the science, the evidence is overwhelming but geo engineering is not yet being discussed. Only SO2 aerosols are mentioned, because the unintended consequence of cleaning marine fuels has added to the problem.
But this article is bang up to date and very detailed.
*** The probabilities of AMOC collapse are discussed in this Nature paper by Peter Ditlevsen et al. ***
A recent study of methane can be found here. From Copernicus. the authors find that tropical areas in South America, East Africa and Indonesia dominate the year on year increases and say this is probably bacterial action. The growth, as well as the level, is record breaking. (2021) and it seems that growth is continuing. From 2000 to 2007 the level was steady. The authors of this study conclude it is emissions rather than reduction in the OH radical. (The OH radical is involved in the measurements).
A blog from Sanjana Kulkarni et al. of Harvard is to be found here and is interesting. It features high level sulphur injection. Sulphur compounds are negative green house gases. One recent unintended consequence of cleaning up marine fuels has reduced sulphates in the atmosphere. But those suphates also contribute acid rain, which is why the fuels were improved.
Positive support for the whole idea is found here. a report by D.W Keith et al reviews the situation and suggests that geo-engineering fits into a time frame where CO2 has not yet been controlled. That is now of course. The report in the Royal Society Philosophical Transactions covers the argument but without the idea of a floating mirror. The business as usual graph accelerates the warming that we are seeing. The reduction of CO2 takes a long time (unspecified but centuries) and geo-engineering allows a period in which that reduction could take place.
An Israeli white ball solution is shown here, mainly for evaporation. This is the kind of technology we need! The picture is used on the home page.
The arguments against geo-engineering are put here in a Guardian article. The floating mirror is not mentioned. several other ideas such as new forests, cloud seeding and sulphur compounds are discussed with a call for a moratorium. The worry is unintended consequences. The problem with those arguments is that they have to rely on reducing CO2 in varying ways. The argument here is that elevated CO2 is still rising and that has caused accelerating CH4 and loss of albedo which is probably exponential. An unintended consequence.
The idea of sulphur injection into the upper atmosphere is discussed here in a DW report. The conclusion is that unintended consequences include acid rain and depletion of the Ozone layer. This was a starting point in finding a simple more mechanical way of increasing albedo. The idea of a floating mirror has not been investigated. Acid rain is not a good idea. But this potentially is part of the solution.
The idea of floating Mirrors has been discussed before. Here. The core is a special smart disc, like a flying saucer. My addition is to use just simple croffles in the special zone. But this more complex idea is interesting.
